Norman’s Ashtan Gainey Softball MVP Spotlight – Presented by Red Sea Waterproofing, LLC

Ashtan Gainey

Norman High School

By Trina Walker

Ashtan Gainey started out playing T-ball and baseball. Ultimately, after playing different sports she followed her mom’s footsteps to play softball. It was always Ashtan’s favorite, and it stuck. Now a senior at Norman High School, Ashtan is a catcher and third baseman for the Tigers.

She will never forget the feeling of hitting her first home run. “I was so proud of myself and knew my dad would be right there after my game to congratulate me. The ball still stays in our living room and my dad refuses to let anyone move it.

“My dad is my biggest inspiration and my best friend; he is the hardest worker I know and always makes time for me and my softball. He supports me in everything I do, pushing me to make my dreams a reality. Without my dad, I would not be where I am today,” says Ashtan.

Fellow senior and teammate, Shea Stanley, leaves the biggest impression on Ashtan. “I have known Shea since sixth grade. Her positive attitude has always been something I admired,” she said.

Ashtan also admires former OU softball player, Nicole Mendez. “I used to take hitting lessons from her. She brought back my love for softball. She encouraged me to be a better athlete and person and showed me what it means to be a true teammate,” Ashtan said.

Softball is a constant in her life. From high school ball to her travel team, Ashtan formed lasting relationships with teammates while improving her skills on the field. “I work every day to make sure I can continue my career to the next level,” she said.

Ashtan is leaving an impact on NHS. “My goal is to leave the program better than I found it and to build a foundation for it to grow. I am involved with my school, attending other sporting events and activities. I love feeling connected and supporting my classmates!” she exclaims.

There is, however, more to life than softball. She also loves chocolate chip cookies with a glass of cold milk. Anyone who knows Ashtan will tell you she has a sweet tooth.
