Norman High School junior Ellison Bloom has built her varsity softball career around a simple standard: play hard, stay humble and keep the team first. Her coach, teammates and even her approach to the classroom fit into that steady, team-centered mindset.
“Coach Wood inspires me because every single day he works hard to try and make our team better and makes the game fun,” Bloom said. That balance of intensity and enjoyment shapes how she plays, especially at first base, where quick reads and calm reactions are essential. “I play mainly 1st base and the hardest thing about it is reading the ball being thrown to me as quick as I can,” she said.
Bloom’s on-field philosophy is rooted in respect for the game and her opponents. One of her core rules is simple: “Don’t pimp (don’t be cocky). If you make a good play or hit a homerun, act like you’ve done it before.” That approach extends to how she handles mistakes. She leans on a “next play” mindset to stay locked in. “Next play mentality. Move on, because errors don’t define you and you can’t control what happened, but you can control how you respond,” Bloom said.
At the plate, Bloom relies on confidence and repetition rather than overthinking. “Honestly, I’m not thinking about my swing too much. I let my mechanics take muscle memory and just see ball, hit ball,” she said. Away from varsity competition, she still gravitates toward hitting and friendly competition, whether she is “playing pickleball with my friends and hitting with my best friend, Quinn.”
Her love for the game is tied closely to the people around her. “What I love most about my team is that we’re all a close family and we all have a really good relationship on and off the field,” Bloom said. She pays close attention to teammates’ strengths, pointing out leaders such as Marcela and Katelyn. “Marcela is the most vocal and Katelyn keeps us laughing,” she said, adding that Marcela “has the highest stolen base percentage on the team and lays out for balls at shortstop.”
That energy carries into the dugout and locker room, where conversations and shared moments add fuel before game time. Bloom said some of her favorite parts of the season are “seeing my teammates’ success and locker room talks.” She credits that group for her growth. “I learn something from every one of my teammates. They all make me better each and every day and hold me accountable,” she said.
Bloom’s commitment to Norman softball stretches beyond the high school season. “For softball, we’ve hosted several kids’ camps and helped coach at the local City of Norman league,” she said, describing a program that gives younger players a chance to learn from the Tigers.
In the classroom, Bloom’s favorite subject is English, and she still remembers the impact of her teacher. “My favorite subject in school is English and my favorite teacher is my English teacher from last year, Mrs. Nelson,” she said. Away from school and the diamond, she loves the atmosphere around the University of Oklahoma. One of her favorite local traditions is “Campus corner on OU football game days.” Bloom’s story is one of steady leadership, humility and joy in the everyday parts of the sport, from camps and practices to big games under the lights.
